How to Play EZ Play Today Music

EZ Play Today music is played on a piano, organ or electronic keyboard and includes two parts - a lead melody part and a chord accompaniment part (see below for a sample page, shown somewhat smaller than actual size).

Right-Hand - The lead melody part, consisting of individual notes, is played with the right hand. The name of each note is shown inside the note head.

Left-Hand - The chord accompaniment part can be played in a variety of ways, depending on the instrument and whether playing alone or with another instrument.

  • On organs or electronic keyboards with auto-chord systems such as fingered-chords or chord-buttons the left-hand simply presses the button or key for the chord indicated in the music. Consult the instruction manual for your instrument to understand how to play major, minor and 7th variations of each chord.
  • On instruments without an auto-chord system, or for musicians who want to play the chord directly, simply play the indicated chord as accompaniment using a suitable rhythm. You can download our free EZ Play Today Chord Guide which indicates the correct keys to press for the major, minor and 7th chords found in EZ PLay Today music. While many chords are listed in this guide, only a small number are used in a particular EZ Play Today arrangement. In fact, we have songbooks that feature songs with just three chords to keep it really simple!
  • You may also want to team up with a guitarist or other musician and have them play the accompaniment while you play just the lead melody.

Before you begin to play some EZ PLay Today music you'll want to setup your organ or keyboard for an authentic sound that fits the style and arrangement of the music. That's where the EZ PLay Today Registration Guide comes in. Learn more about the Registration Guide from our blog post on the subject at Using the EZ Play Today Registration Guide.
